Factors that influence the level of concentration

Attention span and concentration can vary for a variety of reasons.

For example sleep insufficiency and tiredness lead to a decline in concentration and, consequently, it is more difficult to keep things in mind. Or the lack of motivation in what you are doing causes frequent distractions which lead to taking more time than necessary to complete tasks.

But the difficulty in maintaining concentration is also due to continuous interruptions which may depend on other people, on ourselves, on the smartphone that we always keep at hand and so on.

The more your concentration drops, the more ineffective and inconclusive you feel, this leads to feelings of frustration, a stress and irritation. In some cases it also leads to a defeatist attitude or procrastination. That is, putting things off because too much time and the focus needed to do them well have now been lost.

If all or part of what I have said sounds familiar to you, I advise you to continue reading because now I will reveal it to you 5 things you can do right away to increase your level of concentration and be more productive.

How to maintain concentration in 5 simple steps

Distraction is always at hand. Often just a second is enough to take our mind away from what we were doing and then it takes many minutes to get back into the flow of our work.

Luckily there is a solution because too concentration can be trainedjust like a muscle. Obviously it takes commitment and perseverance because if it were a result that could be achieved by snapping one’s fingers, everyone would have bulletproof concentration.

But if you really want to do it you can do it, follow my advice and put it into practice day after day.

1. Create your big picture

Having the picture of the situation in mind helps you be focused and effective. This applies both when you have to complete the tasks of the day and to achieve your business goals three, six or twelve months away.

A great way to keep track of long, medium and short term goals is create a Vision Board where you can write or draw all the goals you want to reach.

If you know where you are aiming and where you are starting from, you will also know how to divide the work, what choices to make and what the priorities are. Having an overall overview you will be able to organize your work without being afraid of unexpected events.

Once you have your path to follow in mind, off-tracks will only take you away from a limited amount of time, because then you will know exactly where to resume your work and how.

2. Focus on the goal

Once you have defined your goals, putting them in order of prioritythere comes a time when you have to start working on each of them.

This strategy works both for tackling everyday tasks and as an approach for achieve a goal of business. In fact, every macro lens always depends on the fulfillment of smaller goals.

So, one way to be able to keep your concentration on what you have to do and get it done is to not think about the mountain to climb but just pay attention to every small step. Then never stop, put one foot in front of the other and you will reach the top.

Another tip to be able to stay focused on what you have to do is to think more about yourself and less about others. Let me explain better: too often we tend to look at other people’s victories and compare where we are with where others are.

Of course, it’s good to take inspiration from those who achieved success before you, but you shouldn’t fall intomistake of letting yourself be overwhelmed by the successes of others. Seeing their final result you may feel a sense of inadequacy because you are not at the same point.

If you make too many comparisons with others and waste time seeing their goals you will have less time to achieve yours.

3. Introduce scheduled breaks

This is a very practical tip to use every time you start doing a job, especially long and complex ones.

Define already before leaving time slot in which to work and others in which to do things small breaks. This way you won’t have many hours of work ahead of you, but shorter work fractions in which you know you have to put all your concentration to get to the break you have planned.

This method is very similar to the famous one Pomodoro techniqueso if you decide to dedicate yourself to a certain activity for an hour, do only that for that time. The only reason you can distract yourself is only if there is a real urgency, otherwise everything else can wait.

If, like me, it happens that other people interrupt you for a signature, a job tip or a problem to solve, the same rule applies in these cases too. Also tell others that you have important work to do and that they can only interrupt you for an issue that can’t wait. Have the courage to leave others waiting for your time too.

4. Eliminate distractions

Do you often reach for your phone multiple times just to take a look at your notifications and messages? Do you read emails as they come in or do you catch yourself multitasking?

Maybe you think you are productive, that you always stay up to date and have everything under control and maximum concentration.

Well, that’s not the case at all. You are wasting precious time and energy which you could instead use to grow your business.

The most obvious move to stay focused is to turn off unnecessary notifications. You may have the impression that notifications aren’t that annoying because they actually only distract you for a few seconds.

Nevertheless, Once you interrupt your workflow, it will take you much longer to re-establish your focus.

A good habit, however, is keep a pad of paper handy to take note of ideas that come to you while you’re at work.

I know, I talk a lot about digital and then I’ll name the paper. Well yes, in this case it is still a very useful and immediate tool. In fact, the moment an idea or intuition arrives, the only thing you have to do is write it down so you can work on it at another time.

A moment dedicated exactly to developing and improving your idea. That will be the moment when mind wandering becomes the new concept of productivity.

5. Find time to distract yourself

Now you must be thinking “Mirko, what are you saying? You talk about concentration and then you tell me I need to distract myself”.

Exactly like that! To be more productive and effective in your business you must also dedicate time to other things. To increase concentration in the important moments when you have to complete your projects, you need to alter moments of leisure in which you can think about something completely different.

The famous free time for sport, for family, for friends, in short to do any activity that you like and that allows you to completely detach yourself from your work.

Don’t be afraid that it’s a waste of time, on the contrary! That is the time in which you help your brain to recharge its energy, to distract itself and then return to being even more reactive at the right time.

Also the dialogue with other people it’s a good way to distract yourself from what you’re doing or to have a discussion with those who have a different idea than yours. Broadening your perspectives will help you evaluate different options and this always leads benefits to the quality of work.

In fact, concentration is essential to increase productivity but it must not lead you to estrangement or preclude your evolution in work and life.

Train your concentration and develop the right mindset

Having the ability to focus when needed and be effective in what you do will make you a better entrepreneur.

The more concentration you have, the more results you get. But I’ll tell you more, concentration and mindset will allow you to cut more and more goals in less time because once you get going you will be unstoppable.

In a frenetic reality like today’s, in which we are all hyper-connected and no longer have the patience to put it off until a later time, we become the target of constant distractions.

How to remedy this?
