Today, the dark mode is available on more and more mobile applications.
Indeed, this feature saves battery and increases the user’s visual comfort.
But if Snapchat or Instagram already offer this mode, this was not yet the case for Google until recently.
Today, this option has been made accessible by the search engine giant, which is why we will explain how to configure it on your different devices and web browsers in the rest of this article.
What is dark mode on Google?
Dark mode on Google allows you to enjoy the search engine interface with a black background, instead of a white background.
This feature is very useful, especially when using Google at night. The user’s visual comfort is thus increased by the reduction of blue light.
Enabling dark mode on a computer via the Chrome browser is very easy and only takes a few seconds. If you are using a Windows PC, this is the simplest and most effective solution:
- open Google Chrome and go to the main page of the search engine;
- then click on “Settings” at the bottom right of the page;
- select “Dark theme: off”;
- Once you click, Google should normally appear in dark mode.
Please note that this technique also works if you use the Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge or Firefox browser.
If you’re on a Mac, you can also configure your computer to get Google Chrome in dark mode. To do this :
- select the Apple menu;
- go to “System Preferences” and click on “General”;
- choose one of the “Appearance Mode” options at the top of the window. You will have the choice between:
- clear: to keep light mode;
- dark: to switch to dark mode;
- auto: to automatically use light mode during the day and dark mode at night.
- then open Chrome to check that the interface is in dark mode.
To switch the Google Chrome application on your mobile to dark mode, you will need to follow different steps than those to apply on a computer.
On Android:
- open your Chrome application on your mobile;
- on the Google home page, touch the small dots at the top right of your screen;
- then select “Settings” and “Theme”;
- From here you will be able to select Google’s dark mode, or choose to leave the system default setting which involves using dark mode when the phone’s overall theme is dark, or when power saver is enabled.
On iOS, the Google Chrome app should be able to automatically adapt to the predefined settings on your iPhone or iPad. To activate dark mode on your Apple devices, here is a short tutorial:
- access the “Settings” of the device;
- then choose “Brightness and display” from the menu;
- select the “Dark” tile at the top of the screen;
- your screen display switches to a black background.
Please note, however, that it is also possible to activate dark mode via the search engine’s home page via the Safari browser or the Mozilla-firefox browser, for example.
To do this, once on the Google home page, touch the three vertical dots on the right of the screen, then select the “dark theme” option.
We hope these tips will help you switch Google to dark mode on your different devices. Up to you !
