In life as with natural referencing, you must not rest on your achievements to move forward. If you want to survive on search engines and surpass your competitors, here is how to do your SEO monitoring.
Specialized French and English sites
SEO is constantly evolving. For this reason, daily reading of specialized sites and blogs is essential to stay up to date with developments and news in the small world of SEO. Monitor both via English-speaking and French-speaking sites. Even if we can say that the Americans are most of the time one step ahead, France is lucky to have a very active SEO community that is always at the forefront.
Here are some blogs you should add to your reading list:
Social networks
Social networks are obviously essential for daily monitoring. Between Twitter, Google +, Facebook and even Linkedin, you are spoiled for choice. However, you will quickly realize that the SEO circle is not very large and that you will always come across more or less the same people.
Concerning Twitter, I will give you my own list of accounts that I follow most assiduously, but you are free to create your own shortlist according to your affinities: abundance_com; @laurentbourelly ; @Seoblackout ; @axenetwit ; @semrush_fr ; @leptidigital ; @webrankinfo ; @RaphSEO ; @thomascubel ; @Beetle_SEO ; @Miss_Seo_Girl
For Facebook, beyond your personal profile where you can follow the pages that interest you, I strongly advise you to join specialized groups. The Francophone Community groups on SEO and SEO – France are focused on SEO in general. SEO – Backlinks – Guest articles is more oriented towards the exchange of links between site publishers. There are of course other French-speaking or English-speaking groups that you can find using the Facebook search function.
Finally, regarding other social networks, there is also Google Plus which I used a little before but which I now find abandoned by the community. Maybe I’m missing something so if any of you use it, please let me know. For Linkedin, we find a lot of the same people as on Twitter but unfortunately there are fewer exchanges and the SEO community is less active. Probably because of the very corporate aspect which doesn’t really fit with the “Geek” spirit of SEO.
Tools to make monitoring easier
There are many monitoring and curation tools that you can use on a daily basis to optimize your time. On the one hand, this saves you from having 50 tabs open at the same time but above all from being aware each time that an article from a site that interests you has just been published. Most of these tools rely on the information push and/or information pull method. Here are the ones that are most used:
Conferences and events
Conferences, events, aperitifs, any excuse is good to get out of the house and meet other SEO colleagues. Even if these events often require a fee, they are always very enriching both in terms of content and the people you will meet. Once again the SEO community is very active in France and there are a certain number of events which are recurring each year:
- Seo Campus
- SMX Paris
- QueduWeb
- SEMSUMMIT
- Web2day
- We love Seo
- NDDCamp

Books and training
We must not forget the books and training courses which remain safe values for staying up to date with our knowledge. I often notice that certain basic practices are not always applied while a small upgrade often allows everything to be put back on track.
If there was only one book on SEO to have in your library, it would be Succeed in your web referencing by Olivier Andrieu. However, I can only advise you to also look at the other books that are published on the subject.
Finally, for training, being self-taught, I am perhaps the least well placed to talk about it. One of the only real diploma courses is the SEO/web editor license from the IUT of Mulhouse. As for the rest, between pseudo digital experts or trainers unknown to the battalions, you will find everything and especially anything on the internet. The only ones that I have only heard good things about are the High Level SEO training, the SEO Boot Camp by Laurent Bourelly or the Formaseo online training by Olivier Andrieux. Finally, I also offer my own SEO training, the result of my experience as a natural referencing consultant and site editor.
Don’t limit yourself to natural referencing
Today, the SEO profession is not only linked to search engines as one might think. SEO is ultimately only one key factor in web success among many others and a good SEO must also be open to other areas. Marketing, user experience, conversion rate optimization and even social networks, all levers that must be mastered if we want SEO to be profitable.
Don’t stand still and always remain open-minded, this is the only way you will progress!
