Opting for a private internet service provider does not guarantee you browsing out of sight. From the ISPs themselves, to the sites you visit, to network administrators, there are many parties trying to track your online activity. If you want to keep a search secret, incognito mode on your browser will suffice. However, if you need to maintain complete anonymity on the web, you will need to consider other solutions. Put on your Dali mask, and browse in complete confidentiality thanks to these methods.
Use a VPN that meets your needs
The Virtual Private Network is the ideal software for accessing a range of services that will allow you to configure respect for your privacy on the internet. This way, you only show the world what you want to show. No aspect of your browsing will be visible unless you decide it should be that way. How is it possible ?
When you connect to a VPN server, your connection is automatically secured. This is called “Tunneling” in English. This term refers to the establishment of a tunnel through which your connection to the different sites will pass, thus protecting it from any intrusion or prying eyes. The software, once installed on your computer or smartphone, establishes a connection to the VPN server beforehand.
It can stop there, if you only want to change your browsing location. You will thus be able to benefit from a navigation address from another country, while physically being in another. This first level of confidentiality has the advantage of considerably reducing the number of people able to keep an eye on your browsing.
The second level concerns the covering of a new identity before moving on to navigation. Some big VPN names include in their premium offers options to tweak (personalize) the way others see you on the internet. You can change :
- your profile preferences,
- choose a category of most visited sites,
- create a fictitious search and browsing history,
All these options to pass for an Internet user, everything that is most ordinary. Then you can create multiple profiles to link them to different addresses that will redirect to each other if someone tries to track you. This way you make your navigation completely untraceable.
Choose the right browser
To access the immensity of information and services on the web, you will need to use a browser. At least if you are a newbie. If you know how to bypass a browser to get the information you need, then you can skip ahead to the next section.
However, let’s come back to our dear readers who need a graphical interface (a little wink) to access the web. The choice of your browser will strongly influence the confidentiality to which you are entitled. Indeed, the most popular browsers have very different ways of managing their users’ privacy.
We will start with the eternal Internet Explorer and its big brother introduced with Windows 10, Microsoft Edge. The first concerned is not recommended quite simply because it has not received security updates for a good half of a decade. Browsing with Internet Explorer is like opening the book of your internet browsing to the world.
As for Edge, the browser receives security updates, but will not be able to guarantee you anonymity or protection against traceability. When it comes to Google Chrome, the most popular browser on the planet also fails to protect your privacy.
Many Internet users turn to Mozilla Firefox to protect their privacy. Fox Browser offers many security features against phishing and malware. In addition, its incognito mode allows you to activate additional extensions which are very focused on privacy.
For the most demanding users, however, the Tor browser includes all the security measures to browse the web anonymously. This browser allows you to encrypt your browsing data from your computer before passing it like a VPN through an “onion” protocol.
All you need to remember about this protocol is that it is surely the most effective method a browser offers to enjoy rock-solid privacy. However, browsing this way will take you more time, as the browser protocol is slow to secure.
Other options for browsing anonymously
The two options mentioned above represent the unstoppable duo to protect your privacy on the internet. If, however, you have the impression that you are being followed by a hacker, you could consider:
- change your proxy addresses, which is like manually doing the work of a VPN,
- minimize the extensions of your web browser, to limit probable security vulnerabilities,
- and be wary of the information you leave on social networks like Facebook.
Whatever your situation, it will be preferable to opt for navigation that protects your privacy in order to avoid any disappointment on the web.
